Cycle 2 – Engineering at Brooks Crossing

During this cycle, the students learned about Engineering and the Engineering Design Process.  They learned that Engineers are creative problem solvers.  The students also learned the steps of the Design Process: Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create and Improve.  The First Graders used the Design Process to complete a challenge.

The students began the cycle with a quick challenge: The Paper Tower Challenge

Challenge:  To build the tallest, paper tower you can.  The tower must be able tot stand up on its own without support.

Materials:  8 sheets of 8 1/2 X 11 cardstock paper, 6 sheets of 8 1/2 X 11 paper, 1 yard of tape.

 

 

After completing the paper tower challenge, the students reviewed the steps they took to respond to the challenge.  They also discussed the character traits they needed to be successful.

They were then presented with another challenge: High Rise Project

Challenge:  To build a tower that can support a tennis ball at least 18 inches off the ground.

Materials:  5 sheets of 8 1/2 X 11 cardstock paper, 4 sheets of newspaper 1 yard of tape, 1 tennis ball

The groups shared their ideas, solutions and reflected on their work.  Through this challenge the student engineers learned the character traits needed to be a successful engineer.
