2017 Cycle 2

Students who have participated in the 1st Grade Engineering Cycle have learned about different types of bridges, Engineering, and the Engineering Design Process. They learned that Engineers are creative problem solvers and there are many different engineering jobs. The students also learned the steps of the Design Process: Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create and Improve. Using the steps of the Engineering Design Process, the students worked on the challenge in small groups. The groups shared their ideas, solutions and reflected on their work. Part of the challenge involved taking on the real challenges an engineer faces and having to work within constraints or limits. The first graders had to work in material, budget, and time constraints. Through this challenge the student engineers learned the character traits needed to be a successful engineer. We also did some research and learned about bridges and what makes them strong. The students took pictures using an iPad or iPhone. First graders who have participated in this cycle will bring home a special code to view the photos of their creations. The students learned the vocabulary below:
Compression – a pressing force that squeezes a material together
Tension – a stretching force that pulls on a material
Dissipate- to spread force over a greater area so that no one spot has to bear the brunt of the concentrated force Transfer- to move force from an area of weakness to an area of strength
Buckle – to bend under compression
Stable -(adj.) ability to resist collapse and deformation; stability (n.) characteristic of a structure that is able to carry a realistic load without collapsing or deforming significantly
Unstable -characteristic of a structure that collapses or deforms under a realistic load
Strong – (adj.) ability to carry a realistic load; strength (n.) the measure of a structure’s ability to carry a realistic load
Civil/Structural Engineer -an engineer who investigates the behavior and design of all kinds of structures, including dams, domes, tunnels, bridges, and skyscrapers, to make sure they are safe and sound for human use
Arch Bridge – a curved structure that converts the downward force of its own weight, and of any weight pressing down on top of it, into an outward force along its sides and base
Beam Bridge – a simple type of bridge, composed of horizontal beams supported by vertical posts
Suspension Bridge – a bridge in which the roadway deck is suspended from cables that pass over two towers; the cables are anchored in housings at either end of the bridge
Pier -a vertical supporting structure, such as a pillar
Deck -supported roadway on a bridge
Span -(n.) the distance a bridge extends between two supports; (v.) to traverse a specific distance
