Monmouth Junction School Engineering

During this cycle, the students learned about Engineering and the Engineering Design Process. They learned that Engineers are creative problem solvers. The students also learned the steps of the Design Process: Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create and Improve. The kindergarten students used the Design Process to complete a challenge.

The students began the cycle with a quick challenge ~The Blocks Tower Challenge: To build the tallest, block tower you can. The tower must be able to stand up on its own without support.

Materials:  Blocks

They were then presented with another challenge: Rapunzel’s Tall Tower Challenge: To build a new tall tower for Rapunzel using only cups and paper. The tower has to be as tall as their waist and have an opening at the bottom of the tower so Rapunzel can leave the tower.

Materials: 8 sheets of 8 1/2 X 11 card-stock paper, several cups that are a variety of sizes.

Using the steps of the Engineering Design Process, the students worked on the challenge in small groups.  The groups shared their ideas, solutions and reflected on their work.
