Ask your child about…

-Being welcomed to the school at the school-wide Convocation assembly
-Creating an All About Me book
-Reading and singing Today is Monday by Eric Carle and making our own book to learn the days of the week
-Discussing the difference between yesterday/today/tomorrow and being able to identify it on a calendar
-The counting jar
-Reviewing the months of the year and creating a class photo chart of our birthdays
-Building stamina to read to ourselves using the pictures, words, and retelling a story

September 21st Talking Points

Ask your child about:

-Ways to keep germs away by watching the YouTube cartoon “Protect Don’t Infect!” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDwrTJ9qqPM&feature=related)
-Two of the three ways to read a book – read the pictures and the words
-Painting a summer tree from our nature walk observations
-What it means to take attendance and how we take attendance using our “attendance stick”
-Learning how to use remote control responders to answer questions about using technology appropriately (lesson given by the gifted and talented teachers)
-Constitution Day – we read and discussed the preamble in kid language and students played a memory game using the pictures of George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, the white house, the court room, and the constitution

We’ve had a great first week!

Ask your child about:

-The friends they are making
-Getting a “tool box” and discussing what we notice and how to use the tools appropriately (pencils, crayons, markers, scissors, glue sticks, glue bottles)
-The steps to following our morning routine
-How to walk in the hallways
-Creating classroom rules and sorting them into our 4 rules: take care of yourself, take care of each other, take care of your tools, take care of the environment
-Reading The Surfer Chick to guide students in illustrating their hopes and dreams for kindergarten
-Free choice options
-Reading Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten and making our own class book
-Reading Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and making our own Chicka Chicka Boom Boom tree with our handprints (hanging in the classroom)
-Introducing our classroom library and how to find/put away books correctly
-Using scissors and glue to make a collage (hanging up in the classroom)
-Learning how to use glue bottles to glue plastic gems on their first initial (hanging in the classroom)
