February 22nd Talking Points

Ask your child about:

-The mystery reader
-Our class trip to the state theater to see The Ugly Duckling and The Tortoise and the Hare
-Two Rider assistant teachers (interns) visiting us for a couple of week every Thursday. Their names are Miss Occhiogrosso and Miss Hegenauer.
-Dental health: Making a model mouth out of marshmallows and writing a story about what we think the tooth fairy does with all the teeth
-President’s Day: reading books, listening to songs on YouTube, voting on our favorite president, and creating Lincoln’s log cabin out of pretzel sticks.
-Money! We learned the physical characteristics of a penny and nickel so far. See if your child remembered who and what is on the heads and tails side! Also, ask your child about how the book A Chair For My Mother relates to money.
-How children and adults use money in their daily lives.

February 8th Talking Points

Ask your child about:

-The mystery reader
-Learning about Chinese New Year and making red envelopes and a dragon
-Trying Chinese New Year treats from Zach’s mom (rice cakes, gold coins, chocolate)
-Assembly given by the Philadelphia Zoo
-Continuing to use strategies, such as a number line, to determine more and less
-Reading books to accurately identify the beginning, middle, and end, characters, setting, and problem
-Playing a new sight word game called “Roll and graph a sight word”
-Playing a Valentine sight word game

February 1st Talking Points

Ask your child about…
-Mystery reader
-Playing Tug of War in math (moving back and forth on a number line and determining what the number is)
-1 more/1less and 2 more/less than a given number (you can do this at home using a 100s chart)
-Sight word work on “like” and “on”
-Identifying the setting and characters when reading to help comprehension
-Writing more “All About Books” in writing workshop making sure to leave spaces and write in lower case letters
-Learning about Groundhog’s Day
