Mid Terms after Snow Day

Hello Everybody,

Here is the revised mid term schedule for everyone:

Friday January 28 (B Day) – 2B String Orchestra (HAP Section)

Monday January 31 (A Day) – 1A Chamber Orchestra and 2A String Orchestra.

Just to remind all string orchestra members again, your chamber orchestra audition will take place at the same time as your mid term.

Finally, there will be no before school lessons on Friday. I will be available during 1st block on Friday, as well as through A and B lunch on Monday the 31st.

Lessons 3rd and 4th Block on Wednesday

Hello Everybody,

This is very last minute, but I will be available for lessons during 3rd and 4th block tomorrow (Wednesday January 26). If you have a HAP or gym during one of these two periods, you are more than welcome to come down for a lesson.

Lessons this week and mid term exams

Dear all orchestra members,

Here are a few reminders for the upcoming weeks:

LESSONS

There will be lessons through all 3 lunches tomorrow (Monday January 24). You need to have a lesson pass to leave the cafeteria to come for a lesson. I will also be available the following Monday (January 31) for A and B lunch only. You may also come at 7am on B Days this week (Tuesday and Thursday) as well as 1st block on B Days. Your 2 lessons for this marking period must be fulfilled by next Monday.

Mid Term

The mid-term exams will be starting on Thursday (Jan. 27) for Period 2B, and on Friday (Jan. 28) for Period 1A and 2A. All string orchestra members (2A and 2B). Remember that you are only preparing the La Folia excerpt for the mid-term, but are expected to prepare the entire audition sheet if you would like to audition for the Chamber Orchestra.

Cello Excerpt

Remember that you can find copies of your instrument excerpt in an earlier posting. There are copies of the cello part with revised fingerings in front of my office, but you may also print out your own copy here.

Chamber Orchestra Assignment – 1A only.

This is the assignment for the chamber orchestra only. Continue reading only if you are the Chamber Orchestra which meets 1st block on A Days!

I repeat, this is only for Chamber Orchestra members only. The assignment for 2A and 2B String Orchestra is in a previous post.

Chamber Orchestra Folks —> This assignment is due at the beginning of class on Wednesday. Responses can be hand-written or typed.

Watch this video of the Warlock Suite, then answer the following questions.

1. What did you notice about their bowing technique in the 1st and 3rd movements.

2. What did you notice about their use of vibrato in the 2nd movement.

3. When did Peter Warlock compose this piece?

4. This piece is based on a book written by whom? When was the birth and death of this author?

5. This author lived during musical period called what?

6. Name 4 instruments that were typically used during this time period.

2A and 2B Blog Assignment

All String Orchestra Members,

Here is your blog assignment. Due to the snow day and some problems with the blog, 2A assignments will be due on Wednesday January 19. 2B assignments will be due on Tuesday January 18. You will be turning in the assignment so responses can be either typed or hand-written.

Assignment: All responses should be in sentence form.

1. Who wrote In the Hall of the Mountain King?

2. In The Hall of the Mountain King is a movement contained within a larger piece of music. What is the name of this piece?

3. What are the dates of the composer who wrote In the Hall of the Mountain King?

4. Listen to the piece here and tell me where you have heard it before.

5. Towards the end of the piece, the tempo gradually changes. What is the italian term for this gradual change in tempo?

There will not be any lunch lessons on Monday January 10 or Monday January 17. You must attend lessons before school on B days or during 1st period on B Days. Remember that the end of the marking period is January 29th!
