At the end of the story, Angela says, “Suddenly, those extra writing assignments I had feared no longer seemed like such a burden.” Angela said this because when none confessed to breaking the window with the football, Mr. Phillips, the teacher, said that everybody would have to write and extra essay each night till the end of the trimester. Angela was an honors student, and already had a lot of work to do. In order not to have an extra assignment, Angela admits that she broke the window, imaging herself as a hero and not much of a punishment from the teacher. Instead she finds herself with and in-school suspension and she has to replace the window. Her mom agrees to make the payment, but Angela has to make up for it by doing endless chores. In addition, she can’t call her friends or invite them over for one month. While she was working on the shrubs, Angela realizes that having to do an extra essay each night wouldn’t be as bad as this.
Angela feels this way because writing an essay couldn’t have been that bad. After all, she is an honors student. Having a punishment from her parents is worse, since they are the ones who can punish you from watching TV, which for kids is a big deal. This reminds me of the time when I had Sunday school homework due. I didn’t work, since I was always busy doing the regular homework, watching TV, or even playing on the computer. When Saturday rolled around, I just sat there at my desk doing homework instead of playing outside. I knew I should’ve done it when I had the time, just like Angela shouldn’t have confessed to the crime. In closing, Angela realizes that she would’ve taken the extra assignment over the list of chores any day.
